Triphala is ayurvedic medicine may be unheard of, which is used as a healing remedy for over thousands of years.

This is a mixture of three Indian medicinal herbs majorly found in India.

It’s one of the oldest medicine of Ayurveda, which was originated in India over 3000 years ago.

Due to its health benefits and awareness, Triphala is becoming popular around the world.

What Is Triphala?

Triphala has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine since ancient times as a multi-purpose treatment for symptoms ranging from stomach ailments to dental cavities. It is also believed to promote longevity and overall health.

It’s considered a polyherbal medicine, meaning it consists of several different medicinal herbs.

Polyherbal formulations are popularly used in Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional system that emphasizes disease prevention and health promotion.

It’s believed that combining synergistic herbs results in extra therapeutic effectiveness and is a more powerful treatment than any one component taken alone.

Triphala is a mixture of the dried fruits of the following three plants native to India.

Amla (Emblica officinalis)

More commonly known as Indian gooseberry, amla plays an important role in Ayurvedic medicine.

It is one of the oldest edible fruits known to India.

Indian gooseberries are the edible fruit of a small to medium-sized tree that grows throughout India.

The berries have a sour, sharp taste and a fibrous texture.

For this reason, the berries are often pickled, soaked in sugar syrup or cooked into dishes to increase palatability.

Indian gooseberry and its extract are used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat symptoms like constipation and also used in cancer prevention.

Indian gooseberries are very nutritious and high in vitamin C, amino acids and minerals.

They also contain powerful plant compounds like phenols, tannins, phyllembelic acid, rutin, curcuminoids and emblicol.

Several test-tube studies suggest that Indian gooseberries have potent anti-cancer properties.

For example, in test-tube studies, Indian gooseberry extract has been shown to inhibit the growth of cervical and ovarian cancer cells .

However, there is no evidence that Indian gooseberries prevent cancer in humans.

Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica)

Terminalia bellirica is a large tree that commonly grows in Southeast Asia.

It’s known as “Bibhitaki” in Ayurvedic medicine, where the fruit of the tree is used as a treatment for common ailments like bacterial and viral infections.

Bibhitaki contains tannins, ellagic acid, gallic acid, lignans and flavones, along with many other powerful plant compounds that are thought to be responsible for its medicinal qualities.

This potent herbal remedy has a variety of uses and may help treat a wide array of medical issues.

In particular, Bibhitaki has been researched for its anti-inflammatory properties.

In one study, 500 mg of Terminalia bellirica substantially reduced uric acid levels in patients with gout, an inflammatory condition characterized by the buildup of uric acid in the body.

Bibhitaki is also commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat diabetes and blood sugar dysregulation.

This is because Bibhitaki is high in gallic acid and ellagic acid, two phytochemicals that have beneficial effects on blood sugar levels, insulin sensitivity and body weight.

These plant chemicals help promote insulin secretion from the pancreas and have been shown to reduce high blood sugar and improve insulin resistance in animal studies.

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)

Terminalia chebula is a medicinal tree that grows throughout the Middle East, India, China and Thailand.

This plant is known as “Haritaki” in Ayurveda, where the small, green fruit of the Terminalia chebula tree is used as medicine. It is one of the main components of Triphala.

Haritaki is held in high esteem in Ayurveda and often referred to as the “king of medicines.”

It has been used since ancient times as a remedy for a number of conditions, including heart disease, asthma, ulcers and stomach ailments.

Haritaki contains phytochemicals such as terpenes, polyphenols, anthocyanins and flavonoids, all of which have powerful health benefits.

Studies have shown that haritaki has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Additionally, Haritaki is popularly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat digestive issues like constipation.

Animal studies have shown that treatment with Haritaki increases intestinal transit time, which can help relieve constipation.

SUMMARY

Triphala is a powerful herbal remedy that consists of Haritaki, Bibhitaki and amla. It is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It cures Kapha, Pitta, burning sensation and dermatoses (Skin). It is laxative, beneficial for eyes, improves digestion, enhances appetite, and cures painful fever. The decoction of the three herbs of harad, belcric and Indian gooseberry is pungent but sweet.

Possible Health Benefits of Triphala

Triphala is promoted as a treatment for a number of common ailments and way to prevent chronic disease.

Properties

It cures Kapha, Pitta, burning sensation and dermatoses (Skin). It is laxative, beneficial for eyes, improves digestion, enhances appetite, and cures painful fever. The decoction of the three herbs of harad, belcric and Indian gooseberry is pungent but sweet.

Medicinal usage:

Hair: Take 2-5 gm Triphala powder with 125 mg loha bhasma (Iron ash) mixed in it, every morning and evening. It prevents hair fall.

Eyes: Soak 1 teaspoonful Triphala powder in water at night and next day morning use this water to rinse the eyes. It cures eye disorders.

Tumour: In case of tumour due to pitta, give 1-2 teaspoonful juice of grapes and harad with jaggery mixed in it or give 3-5 gm triphala powder with sugar mixed in it. Give it thrice a day.

Lack of appetite: Triphala, dadim (pomegranate), rajadan- these all cure acidity and urinary disorders and are good for heart. These also enhance interest in food.

Acidity. Give 1/2 teaspoonful triphala powder with water, thrice a day. It reduces the acidity.

Constipation: At night, before going to bed, take 1 teaspoonful Triphala with warm water. It cures constipation.

Worms: Triphala, turmeric and Neem are strong, sweet and cure kapha and pitta disorders. It cures dermatoses, kills worms and cleanses ulcers.

Jaundice: Mix Triphala, Tinospora, vasa, kutki, chiretta and bark of Neem. Take 20 gm of this mixture and boil in 8 times water till water is reduced to 1/4th . Add honey to the remaining decoction and give this to the patient every morning and evening. It cures jaundice, anaemia and other such liver disorders.

Anaemia: Triphala, Antidysenterica and Jungle flame- cures obesity and disorders of sperm. It is also beneficial for burning sensation, piles, jaundice and diabetes.

Excessive urination:

  1. Triphala, bamboo leaves, nut-grass, and Indian Aloegive 3-4 gm powder of this mixture with honey and ghee. It cures diabetes.
  2. Give paste of 2 teaspoonful Triphala powder with sandbar salt mixed in it. It also cures diabetes.

Urinary disorders: Triphala, Berberis aristata, deodar, nutgrass take all of them in equal quantities and prepare the decoction. Give this to the patient twice a day.

Swelling and oedema: Medicate the Triphala decoction in cow’s urine and give this to the patient every morning and evening. It cures oedema and swelling.

Rasayan: Triphala cures all types of disorders and is known to promote longevity. Its regular use delays ageing.

Bleeding diathesis: Give 20 ml decoction of harad, beleric, Indian gooseberry, and Indian laburnum with honey and sugar to the patient. It cures bleeding diathesis, burning sensation and pain.

Fever:

  1. This herb is anti-pyretic. Give its 10-20 gm decoction 1 hour before the onset of fever.
  2. Give 20 ml Triphala decoction or give juice of Tinospora. It is beneficial in visham fever. or give shatpbalghee.

Dermatoses: Use Triphala and vasa decoction for bathing. It can also be give to the patient to drink. It cures dermatoses.

Weight Loss:

Soak 1 teaspoonful Triphala in 200 gm water overnight. Next day morning, boil it till it is reduced to half. Mix 2 teaspoonful honey in it and drink this when warm. In a few days of its consumption, it can reduce several kgs of weight.
